I expect a working sun java plugin in a few months. See the actual status of sun java plugin for amd64:

also, the free java implementation gcjwebplugin is making good progress (but still not working for Proxmox VE, a few missing features)

For installation and first configuration the java console is quite ok for me. For working on a configured system I prefer other methods like RDP for managing remote windows servers - less bandwidth intensive.
