Introduction
Proxmox Virtual Environment focus on the enterprise market. By delivering a selection of useful Virtual Appliances an enterprise can focus on their primary targets. Proxmox VE does not only provide a platform - it is more. You can run commercial and open source Virtual Appliances, just what you need and also a mix of both.
Do not forget one important issue: Proxmox VE is free to use and open source. So you still have some money for the commercial Appliances (if you need any), for reliable hardware and for the people doing the installation (your IT staff).
Examples
Here are just a view examples to explain the way to work with Proxmox VE.
You need to build up an intranet site or documentation portal with open source software?
We know, there are hundred´s of software packages around. You can start evaluating a lot of them or you just take a look what the Proxmox VE community suggest´s here - Media Wiki - and give it a try. Installing MediaWiki on Proxmox VE takes only one minute (I assume you already installed Proxmox VE). And do not forget, you can do easy backups and restores if necessary. Very important if you need to upgrade or replace the hardware. Read this nice discussion for an enterprise use of MediaWiki.
You need to protect your network against spam and viruses?
Just go for the Proxmox Mail Gateway
You need a full featured proxy server?
Just go for the CYAN Secure Web
You need to test out bleeding edge versions
Install a standard OS like CentOS, Fedora, Debian Squeeze, Ubuntu, Windows, FreeDOS, etc and load in the dependancies and the bleding edge software - give it a spin and test out another scenario by reverting to a snapshot taken earlier. Many appliance temlpates like Joomla v1.6, MediaWiki v1.16, etc., are constantly updated by the community along with patches so that testing of the SVN versions becomes a snap.
You need to simulate a whole physical network
If you wish to simulate an issue in a client's network that consists of many physical machines, you can simulate it in many containers and KVMs in one Proxmox VE and troubleshoot the network and test out the workability, pros and cons of different network configs without destructively invading the target network.
