Yes, that's stupid indeed. Need to wait for patch to copy from children to parent.
(I think It'll be ready for kvm 1.3)

But this is simply not practical - copying the whole image is totally stupid!

No, we can't use external snapshot for backup, because the merge afterwards is simply not practical.
