Yes,I think it can be usefull if you don't manage your own network (hosting provider) and you don't know if multicast is available.

Just made a package for the omping tool:

This is also included in RHEL to test IP multicast issues. 

Code is a bit newer that ssmping, and omping is a bit easier to use 
because you do not need to start an extra daemon. 

Should we include that tool by default?
