They are 2 ways with qemu, human monitor command (hmp) aka old way.
since last year, we use QMP protocol, which use json, easier to parse response.

But both protocol are doing the same thing, so it's strange that you have resolved it with human monitor command.

I can see that our solutions are remarkable identical:-) 
I had solved it with the human-monitor command but I discovered this 
was very unstable. Your usage of vm_mon_cmd seems a lot more stable so
