"from the outside" means a port forward from your router to the destination machine?

That means, you need to adapt your port forwarding rule to the virtual machine, else your packets will not reach it.

I'm using bridge and it still does not seem to be working for me.  I can access the port within my local network, but the port remains closed to the outside.  If I use that port on another standard desktop running Ubuntu, the port opens just to the outside just fine.
