Maybe Wheezy != PVE installer.

You can use a hardware raid config, it will work (usually).

Regarding raid, I agree, but some users are using ZFS(onlinux) with success, which is definitely a 'soft raid'. I also use zfsonlinux in all my servers and I do not plan to use hardware raid in any case.

Yes, one need more manual work on non-standard configs, which usually worth the effort.
